I have heard a lot about the kit to hook up your oil drain through the bilge drain.
I was wondering about this for my 92 3.0L Mecruiser. How is this product and is it applicable to my motor? Where can I get it?

This site and its members are great.
Anyone with boat should join and benefit from the sites members and vast knowledge. :p

there is a drain plug in the parts picture so
you should be able to match it up if you have the plug
Who sells this kit? And is it worthwhile versus pumping oil out through the dipstick?

Steve, I had a Volvo 5.7L engine which I drained the oil out through the dip stick tube which was MUCH faster than what I have now.......Merc 8.1L with the drain hose through the bilge plug hole. With the oil hot, it still requires well over 1 hour to drain the 9 quarts of oil out the bilge drain hose.

You can also pump the oil out of the drain hose, but if you don't have a pump, you can drain it out the drain plug with the hose.
Check with your local dealer, I'm fairly sure there is a kit in the dealers accessory book.

Hmmmm..... So it will not be harmful to the engine if I do it through the dipstick everytime? I want to take the best care of her I can. I also heard that pouring some fresh oil in with the filter off can help flush out impurities.
Any ideas?

It won't hurt to use the dipstick method, that's how it's been done for many, many years.

Dip stick okay, (warm first) as they have removed the rocks that used to be in oil many moons ago. Its your FILTER you should do every change too!

I had to re-read this. A waste of good oil. Toss the old filter with the old oil at the recycle (please) center. If you have a filter that mounts with the opening facing up, best to fill it first on the bench, so when you start the motor it has a full filter, and gets right to pumping oil to the engine, rather than filling the filter first.

Robby , I meant to get anything that the pump hasn't gotten while your changing oil/filter.

Re: Quik Drain kit

I used to pump my oil thru the dipstick. Now I use a fram sure drain valve (replaces the drain bolt) and fited it with a rubber hose from the parts house and then run it thru the bilge into a pan waiting on the ground. It only takes about 15 minutes to drain the oil from the motor, and while it is draining, I am also draining and refilling the outdrive. I find it easier to do it this way, and I feel better knowing that those last few ounces (the ones with all the crud in them) get drained. There is more than one way to eat a Reeces...try it more than one way and see what works best for you.

It's Still a Waste of Good Oil..........
The Absolute Best Way has been stated here,
Pump it through the Drain Hose.........
The Drain Hose is the Best Location to pull from,+ the Pump Speeds the process up...........
This can even be done At The Dock, instead of On The Trailer....................

Robby,
Pre-filling the Filter changes absolutely Nothing.......
Full filter, or Empty Filter,
The Engine Bearing have Oil as Soon as the Oilpump, Pumps...............
The Oil Filter,+ Oil Pressure Gauge is at the End of the Oil Flow Path.................
Right where it Falls back into the Base........ ;)

Re: Quik Drain kit

Hey guys, look at the dipstick tube on the V6 and V8 Mercruisers. They are plumbed into the bottom of the pan for goodness sakes.
The 3.0L engines only leave about a pint of oil in the pan if the engine is level or a bit bow high. Not a big deal if you are changing the oil every 100 hours or less. Filling the filter with fresh oil means very little and may give you an extra hour of engine life.
Lots of maintenance items need to be looked at more than just that last few ounces of oil in the pan during an oil change. If you worry about it, change the oil every 50 hours.

Re: Quik Drain kit

One trick I heard of (haven't tried it yet) was to:
1. Warm up the engine.
2. Put a thick (lawn waste/contruction grade) trash bag in bilge so that it catches oil from plug/dipstick bolt.
3. Remove plug/dipstick.
4. Once drained you can pull bag CAREFULLY out of bilge.
5. Pour bag into empty oil container(s) to be recycled.

****I would think that you would have to be careful about not having engine/oil too hot or you will melt bag. I have just pumped it through the dipstick myself.

-JustMrWill

Uh, sorry to get off topic, but this sounds weird. No filtered oil to the bearings? What about the oil runoff from the rockers, bearing clearances, lifters, gears, etc. This means some of the oil never gets filtered.
I guess we're talking about the 3.0 ( I know nothing about this motor ) just a little puzzled.

now you know why i dont think the oil filter study is as inportant as it would seam its hard for a low flowing filter to hurt anything

tommays

Re: Quik Drain kit

I've always done it the way "JustMrWill" said in his post. The only difference is I use the thick trash compactor bags. Works great! I have a IL6 so I have alot of room to pull the bag out.
