ran a ground, what did i break?

Well yeterday when i was out in biscayne bay i ran a ground for a split sec, after that i noticed the rpm's were going up but the boat was not moving like it should, as speaking to a couple of people they have said i broke the hub, what i noticed was when i spin the prop by hand it spins out of round. If it is just a hub how much do they run? How hard are they to do?

You may have bent the shaft.

Take the prop off, put the engine in N and spin the prop shaft. You'll know in a heartbeat if you are in deep doo doo or not. If the shaft spins correctly, replacing the prop is a simple as looking for them on this site.

ok i pulled the prop off and started the motor and put it in gear the shaft spin's perfect so i guess just the hub broke? do i have to buy a new prop and just get that one re done?

You're a lucky man, dude......scuse the french.

For what props like Hustler on this site cost, and their performance, being alum, you can't justify having your's fixed.

Get a new one and the Hustler has a plastic hub so if you bang it up, rather than spending the $100 for the whole thing, you can spend $70 for the prop and reuse your hub.

I am very happy for you being so lucky, cause the alternative starts at $1000 and you are without you boat.

Ordering a prop off here and you'll have it in 3 days on regular delivery and for $10 more you can have it overnight. 8) for you.

The shaft is probably ok, but i would check with a micro meter. The bent can be too small to see with naked eye but still ruin your bearings.

Don't agree with having to go to that expense considering how many boats out there spend their lives with dinged up props that exert a heck of a lot more radial pressure on the bearings than the shaft being out of plumb by a few microns.

thanks guys for all the help, see i wouldnt mind spending the money to get a nice SS prop but about 4 months ago i went and tested like 5 prop/size's and still the old alum junk 21" felt better i thought.
the 19" got more rpm's thats about it, anyone use the new mercury enertia prop?

Chris - I have one on my boat. I have found it to be very efficient.

It's not an expense, just borrow one from a workshop.

No one around here loans precision tools and to use it correctly it needs to be on a measuring table where it can be calibrated. All of which means that you have to hire it done (if you can find someone to do it) and you have to remove your lower unit to do it.

Now, in retrospect, one could take a scale and place it on the concrete floor upon which the trailer is sitting, remove the prop, and while someone else it turning the shaft, inspect for out-of-round.

I did think about doing this to my prop (not shaft) just to see how tight of a tolerance it's built to beins the manufacturer chopped off the trailing edge (kinda like a cleaver) and the chopping was done with a grinder.
