Rated "E" for Everyone"? I think not!

We got our daughter a Nintendo DS for her birthday the other day and a few games rated E (everyone). To me that means little kids too. Today she brought it to me and asked if I could remove the "D" word from a dialog box one of the characters was "saying". I was proud of her for realizing that this was wrong and that it should not be in the game but equally ticked off that it was there in the first place. It didn't even make sense they way they used it.

In a game where you blow the heads off aliens that's rated "M"... ok. But a game designed for little girls where they dress up a digital doll? That's a bit uncalled for.

Complain to them, CN Spots! Let them know that people don't like that kind of stuff in an "E" for everyone game for little girls!

I would also complain to the place you bought it. If you got the game at wallymart. I know they will make changes or pull it from the shelf. Done it bofore and will do it again.

Good point. That's a much more painful place to hit them than their own customer service!

Unless there's another D word that I'm not thinking of, I doubt they'll do much about that one.

One of the characters held up a dress and said "Dam moths" but spelled correctly. Not the end of the world but no point in it being in there. They could just as easily have said darn or something. If they wouldn't say it on Blue's Clues it shouldn't be in a game for kids. imo

you'd be surprised what gets censored now days. Our local radio station won't play the word "smoking" in the new Kid Rock song.
Walmart takes no prisoners on their approach to censorship. It does seem very unnecessary to have that word there.

Speaking of radio stations and media.....if you really want to get their attention find one of the local TV investigative reporters looking to make a name for themselves. They are always looking for something like this.

I have to say, those ratings are very misleading.

As for the smoking being banned on the radio, see that kinda figures. They are afraid of litigation since the courts have basically made it open season on anyone that even mentions smoking. Damn on the other hand, has religious undertones to it. Since we are now all supposed to be religiously neutral at the least, or atheist at best, damn is perfectly acceptable, since the only people who would object are religious (specifically, but not necessarily, judeo-christian). In today's society, and especially in the media... christians don't count. It matters if anyone else is offended by something, but it doesn't matter if they are offended by something.

The entertainment world seems to be totally incapable of using restraint sometimes. Although there isn't really anything on the Shrek DVDs that a three year old would figure out, watch one of them some time - there are double entendres all over the place. I suppose Dreamworks thinks they are there to keep the adults amused, when they have to watch the movies over and over and over, but this is another one that seems to be uneccessary.

the shrek ones were on purpose. Thye even hinted toward it on the commercials. it was the idea that it would be entertaining for both child and adult just in different ways. That way the adult would want to take the child to the movie.

I don't think it's a big deal. I was saying a lot worse than that when I was 10. If you don't like it, take it from her. You're the adult.

Not the point. 10 year olds are killing folks these days but that don't make it ok. If My kid says worse than that I'll tan her hyde and she knows it. -I've never had to and I honestly don't believe that I will. She's a lot classier than I was at her age:D. But even SHE thought that it should not have been in the game and the label misled us to think that it ok for everyone to play. She did the right thing in telling me and she really likes the game so I didn't want to punish HER for bringing it my attention. She already knew the word and that it was bad so I just told her keep coming to me with problems like that so that we can deal with them together.

I'll take her to get a new game this weekend.
Perhaps something by Tom Clancy.:D

It might be ok for a 10 year old, but the E for everyone tag makes it sound like it's fine for a 3 year old, too.

Of course, I am being a hypocrite here, since I have cussed in the presense of my son on occasion of stubbing my toe, etc... and I've used much worse words than damn when I do that, so it would be pretty hypocritical for me to completely beat them up over it... But I am saying that the E for everyone tag should be the youngest age group, for clarity's sake. Then they can just put the numbers such as 10+ for ten and up... I don't see what's so hard about that. But of course I also realize that this is all a marketing ploy to get you to buy games you wouldn't have otherwise bought. So I have to agree that in this regard, they really don't have any restraint, and further industry regulation is apparantly required to force them into being responsible corporate citizens.

Considering no 3 year old can read (or should be playing games like this anyway) I would say it's ok for anyone who wishes to get it for their 3 year old.
