Re: Raw Water Pump or Stern Drive Pump

I have just been to the local marine parts store to get there opinion. They looked up my motor and determined that the degree thermostat used should be a 160 degree. They claim that was what was on this model originally.

This boat will be run 90% of the time in fresh water.

Is this 160 degree thermostat fine, or should I definitely go with the 140 degree?

I want to be sure that the engine is running at its required operating temperature!

I have the same drive. It is a Mercrusier 888, Ford 302. It is of 1972 vintage. My Mercrusier manual says that you can use a thermostat within the range of 143 degrees to 160 degrees F. You can use the 160 degree thermostat with out any problems. Flashback uses a 140 degree thermostat on his small block Chevy and he says it works well. With the 140 degree thermostat, it would give you a little leeway if the pump started to wear out and the temperature started going up. You would notice the temperature change earlier, before the block got too hot.

Thanks for all the input. Considering the cooling problem that was posed in the past it seems as if my best bet will be to use a thermostat at the lower end of the temperature range. I'll probably go with the 140 or 143.

Thanks!
