Hi Rodbolt, Ray and whoever. About a year ago I had a problem with my 84 V6 150HP(ETXN)Yamaha. I had a no/low spark problem which turned out to be a bad stator. As a result of that problem, I ended up with several new pieces of test equipment such as DVA meter, etc. They helped to resolve the problem. I also discovered resistance errors in both the Yamaha factory manual and the Sealoc manual. Thanks to Rodbolt and Ray, I was able to troubleshoot and repair the problem.

I don't have a problem with the engine now, however I was just looking at a post dated March 13, 2006 titled "Question for Rodbolt". In that thread, Ray mentioned that he uses a timing light to check the spark on the pre 90 models because the voltages are lower. I think that if I had used a timing light initially to troubleshoot last years problem I would have gotten to the problem sooner. I now intend buying a new timing light. My question is:

Can I use an inductive pickup timing light or do I need another type timing light?

Regular inductive pickup type works fine. If it is for a Yamaha, don't spend a lot of money since it will sit on a shelf a lot more than it will be needed.

Thanks Ray, Last year I thought my Fluke DVM and my ocilloscope etc. would be fine to troubleshoot the CD ignition and ended up buying a peak voltage plugin for my Fluke. It's good to hear that vanilla test equipment will suffice!!!!

I ran into a Snap-on that doesn't like 2-strokes. It was a deluxe model with all the bells and whistles. Simple lights seem to have no problems. Interference from the ignition system must mess with the fancy ones. ;)
