I have a Sea Talk autopilot on my Bayliner and I can't get it to stabilize on a course. The autopilot compass appears to have a correct heading and everything appears to be in working order but no matter what the boat speed, it goes on course for only a minute or so then goes hard over to either port or starboard and won't release til I overide it. I've checked the startup settings (suggested by mfg in owner's manual) and have tried changing a couple of them but nothing seems to help. Anyone out there know what I should be looking for to correct the problem? It's an older model, probably 1995, which is my boat year too.

Does your boat have power steering or manual steering? They stopped making the model for non power, probably because there was so many problems with them, just a guess. They were quite inexpensive around ($700.00) compared to what's out there now (1400.-1700)

My boat has the power steering. Does that make a difference?

I'll have to give it a try I guess. I thought maybe there was a simpler solution because I've never used one before.
