Re: Re-assembled outdrive not shifting

Any advice on best way to flush the cooling system? I was successful in getting the hoses off.

Re: Re-assembled outdrive not shifting

Successfully put in the new thermostat - I think. Same problem. Takes about 4 minutes to red line the temp gauge. Shouldn't the water coming out of the middle of the prop be warmer than what's going in through the muffs when the engine is warm? Mine is not. It still doesn't seem that water is circulating through the engine. I've obviously done something wrong. Any ideas? BTW the new thermostat looks much different than the old one, but it fits fine.

4- minutes to redline= no water flow, either in or out of the engine.

How hot do your manifolds get? Too hot to touch....maybe a bad temp sending unit?

Yes manifolds get very hot. I'll look for the temp sending unit in the manual. Thanks

I cannot find anything in the maual about a "temp sending unit". What is it, where is it and what else could it be called?

Re: Re-assembled outdrive not shifting

Really?? what manual are you using? Not the correct one.....

Cause Manual #3 that Chris has a link to (back in post #18)  has a wiring diagram on page 3F-38 & 3F-39 depending on if you have a ammeter or voltmeter which would not effect the wiring to the water temp sender. It would/should have a single wire Tan in color going to it which runs to the sender terminal on your water temp gauge up near the helm.

See the attached photo of the sender on the engine:

I don't know what page it would be on but there should be at test procedure to see if it is working correctly probably in troubleshooting. Will see if I can find it....

I was wrong.. start on page 3D-1 for gauge/ sender testing. It's all in there.. baby;)

Re: Re-assembled outdrive not shifting

Thanks. Another thought -I have a laser thermometer- how hot should the manifolds get before ther is a problem?

Re: Re-assembled outdrive not shifting

Testing again, the manifold external temp - measured with a laser thermometer goes to over 180 degrees in about 10 minutes at idle. I would guess that's too high since the new thermostat is 140 degree rated. The temp was still climbing, so I shut it down. The water exiting the prop hub was still cool. Something is preventing the water from circulating through the engine.

Re: Re-assembled outdrive not shifting

How bad was the old thermostat?

This is typical with these engines....

2 possible causes at this point...

-1 New thermostat installed upside down -- spring section goes down -- if you installed it with the spring up, then it will never open.
(The spring gets tighter and looser with temperature -- hotter = open The spring has to be on the hot side to make the thermostat open)
-2 Engine water circulating pump shot -- i had this problem with my boat about 10 years ago -- kept getting hot, drive water pump working great, finally pulled the engine water pump (like the water pump on a car engine -- but do NOT replace it with one meant for a car!!!) and the fins were totally corroded off!! New pump fixed that quick and easy!

Either way, I'd wager that the top of your manifold is HOT, but the bottom is nice and cool -- the bottom is water cooled, the top is not.. A hot block will transfer heat to the manifold..

Hope this helps

Have you looked at the water hose in the bell housing and the water pocket and grommets, is the water tube in place correctly/ just some thoughts , good luck Bill

Re: Re-assembled outdrive not shifting

Looks like you may be right. I pulled the hose off the thermostat housing that comes from the outdrive. I ran it briefly and no water came out. I ran water back through this hose and it came out of the prop hub. I'm now going to remove the outdrive and look at the water tube and impeller assembly.

Do you have power steering? Oops... disregard that...just reread your last post about the water coming out of the prop.... Interested to hear about what you find on your inspection.... keep us posted!
