Tried to check my Trim and Tilt fluid on my Tohatsu 40D per the manual....

Trimmed the motor all the way up and rested it on the stop bar....

When I took out the fill bolt I immediately took about 1/4 of a quart to the face.....

After running inside and cleaning my face, eyes and changing my shoes and pants.....

I tried to re-fill it to the bottom of the top level bolt and purge the system by turning the manual tilt screw to the manual position and raising and lowering the motor by hand 5 times (per the instructions) and lost all of the oil I had just put in + some......

Now I'm out of power trim fluid and it dosen't work.....

Any suggestions???.....

When moving it manually it makes all kinds of bubbling noises and won't go all the way up........

So much for fishing tonight......

In theory that is the way to do it. It sounds like you have a lot of air in the lines. But, raise the engine up and wedge it into place. Open the fill screw, fill to the top. close the screw. Work the ram a few times up and down. raise the engine up and wedge it into place. Open the screw and top off. Close the screw. Work the ram a few times up and down. Walk away for 12 hours. raise the engine up and wedge it into place. Open the fill screw, fill to the top. close the screw. Work the ram a few times up and down. raise the engine up and wedge it into place. Open the screw and top off. Close the screw.

If it doesn't work then you have a failure in the system. The fluid is just AT fluid.

Thanks for the reply Elvin....

I ended up wasting 2 bottles of Trim fluid so I just took it in and had the shop take care of it for me.....

Cost me $85 bucks but i'm back in business.....Bummer that I still don't know how to bleed the system....Thats the reason I try to do this stuff myself, i'll know how to bleed it again down the line or can help someone else out with the same problem..........

I don't see where you were making a mistake in the process, but since the shop could do it you had to be skipping a step somewhere along the way. The bleeding and filling process is the same on most PT systems regardless of brand. :)

Re: Re-Filling Trim and Tilt on 2001 40D

Hi,
I have with my Tohatsu 70HP the same issue. Lot's of air and i can't get it to raise or stay in position yet. I do hear lot's and lot's of air.
The manual says i have to fill the system with 23Oz. The system was completely empty and now i put in oil but not even half of what has to be in it.

@Tohatsu Guru, when you speak about working the Ram up and down several times is that with the manual valveopen or closed?

Thanks in advance for the reply.
