Re-Lube Cylinders? Yay or Nay?

I just took my boat out of the garage and fired it up for about 5 minutes. I'll be putting it back in the garage and not starting it up for about a month/month and a half. Should I re-lubricate the cylinders again with fogging oil or will I be fine, once again: engine ran for about five minutes I'm not sure if that means good things or bad things.<br /><br />Thanks for any insight

I've always heard that if it'g going to be idle for more than three months, you should fog them. Besides, why not..? it's not hard, just do it!

I don't know why you would do that with no intension of using it. Yes, I would fog it again. And the next time you take it out (for the season), first change the oil and filter again. Water is a byproduct of combustion, and a motor only run 5 minutes creates a lot of it. You haven't hurt anything, but always try to do a 20 minute on the LAKE or soon after a flusher-running start up. If you want to charge the battery, use a charger, not the motor. Hope this helps

Well, the reason i did it was i just bought the boat and i wanted to make sure that it did in fact run. So i had the muffs on it and fired it up for a short period of time.

Not a big deal Dan.I would start it again in a few weeks and skip the fogging.Starting it will keep the cylinders lubed for the interim.Let it at least warm up though.5 minutes is not enough.Welcome to iboats!!! Charlie

I think charlie is right, not a big deal, I would also start it again in a week or two and let it run for thirty minutes or so. Go ahead and check everything over, change the oil and filter. I would rather check it over and know everything is great before I drop it in the water and find out I have some problems that need addressing. Have fun with the new boat.

I agree with Charlie and Vipzach, run it again in a few weeks, or if you feel like it every other week until you are ready to use it. I also agree that you should run it until it reaches operating temperature, it helps to burn condensation from internal parts of the engine instead of it entering the oil pan.

I recommend that everyone run their boat once a week. It keeps a bad Diposition at bay... :)

hahahaah yep once per week :) <br /> but always remember that in the cold northern territories freezing is usually more of a concern than rusting. most the air up there is so cold it does not contain enough water to rust anything. I spent a year in waukegan IL and a year in Bath ME. way way to cold.

Hello? This is ARROGANT....My post..<br />"I don't know why you would do that with no intension of using it. Yes, I would fog it again. If you had said that, maybe you would have got a different answer. Running a boat motor for a few minutes that you just bought or not, is STILL a bad idea. That was your question. Please don't come here, and if you don't like the opinions you recieve after asking a simple question (without any of the facts that other people post, as we can't read minds, such as WHAT boat, WHAT motor, WHAT year, WHERE located...ya know, the LITTLE things?) I could go on, but I don't feel like you want help from me anyway, so good luck.........(now where's that list of mine..

Re: Re-Lube Cylinders? Yay or Nay?

I would like to see if I can get a more deffinitive answer. I took my boat out on the lake for 45 min on a nice day 2 weeks ago. When I got back , had anti-freeze put in because it stays at the lake, but did not re-fog. It will probably be 2-3 more weeks before I dont have to worry about a Missouri freeze. Should I re-fog or will it be okay? I really don't wanna pay the 80.00 every week for the service guy to re-do the anti-freeze by starting it up every week or so if I go down and start it up like was mentioned in an earlier post.

Re: Re-Lube Cylinders? Yay or Nay?

Splugeeman, In your case, the best thing to do would be to remove the spark plugs and shoot some fogging oil into the cylinders. That would be the best and safest. I personally wouldn't bother with it, I believe that an engine can sit for a month without the rings rusting to the cylinder walls. Would I leave an engine sit for three or four months....no, but a month shouldn't kill anything.

of course it will be okay stood for three weeks without additional oil in the cylinders.. assuming the engine dosnt have any saltwater in its cylinders.. i added that last bit just in case.. he he<br /><br />without help from the sea engine internals really do not go rusty that quickly.. they should be okay stood for several months not weeks..<br /><br />trog100
