The Model and Serial Number are missing from my Johnson 70 hp vro motor. The number of the three carburetors, 326951, could not be found in the BRP parts catalog for the years 74 to90. The cylinder block has a number 38941 stamped on it near the lifting lug on the motor. I wonder if this is any use. Are there other part numbers on this motor that would identify the model and year? I tried the pictures icon but that failed. Thanks. Soddy

Is that number 38941 on a round disk? If so, it is the serial number, not much use without the model number.

64osby; Where is the plug located that you refer to? Thanks for your reply.
F-R: The number is stamped on what I think is the cylinder head. Thanks for you reply.

Should be a quarter sized silver disc with the model # will start with a J. Probably located back by the head towards the top of the motor if not the top of the motor. Will look like it is pressed into the block.

Merged the new pix topic into the original topic.

Why the new topic just for pix?

My son and I looked at the welch plug near the top of the motor. He scrapped the paint off and there was no number there.
I will try to get a picture of the number 38941. Thanks for your help.

??? Why did you refer to it as a VRO? Anyway, core plug/welsh plug/freeze plug/disk with the serial number location is as shown on this picture. If it is missing, there will just be a shallow cavity where it used to be. Just so you know, motors with that plug missing were probably stolen at some point in their history. Could be a problem if it was recent.

Based on the powerpack it is NOT a 77 model.-----It is not an 83 based on the fact it does NOT have a primer injector.------Close up of the remaining decal bits on the mid section may help pinpoint the year.-----And the exact year does not matter as parts from those years are essentially all the same.

Thank you all for your help. Sorry about the new topic. Previous owner said the VRO was disconnected and the motor run on mix.. The plug my son looked at for serial number is as shown in F-R picture. The number 38941 is stamped on the casting just below the lifting eye. I will get a picture of hood and top of block.
The second picture has the paint removed.

As I see it the motor NEVER had a VRO system.------That # on top of the block means little as far as identification !-------Post a picture of the cowling.----If it is original it makes for instant identification !

I will try to post pictures of the cowling and top of the motor and tilt trim. I appreciate all the information I can get to try to tie down the year of this motor. I hope the pictures will give some clues. Thank you all.
