Well the fellow sold it to me for $30,00 but as I said in original post I know nothing of Merc's.. sn# 2999661 is this a 1966? compression is 100-105 with one pull from a rope on each cylinder, I touched the starter to a battery and got nothing but a spark so the first thing I guess I will do is pull the starter and bench test it, any advise for bringing her to life or other general info will be much appreciated.

That Merc is a 1971 model.....value has gone up already.Compression ok,i would go a few pulls on each.Check spark with full battery.Clean/service all fuel parts including carbs....thats a start.

Well, it's got a starter on it. That alone is probably worth more than $50.:D

Thanks guys' I am looking at this project as education, This is only my second Merc, my other is a small 7.5 that is a jewel. but it is the basic same design as the 2 cylinder omc types, So for me this is uncharted waters, I will do just as you say aussieflash that indeed sounds like a good starting point. I hope to start on her this weekend :)

dump a little 2stroke in each cylinder and pull the motor over a few times to get things lubed up. good idea if it's been sitting for a long time, but with compression over 100, assuming it's been sitting for a long time, a little lube will give you higher compression test numbers. probably needs new fuel filter, check fuel hoses. carb float bowl condition will tell you if you need to totally tear down the carb(s) or not. compression, spark, fuel should make her go.

That's a great deal for a good ol' motor! Had a 65hp on a 14' Fiberform V-hull runabout and it pushed the boat 37 mph in fresh water.

A hint on the CDI-type ign, it requires power to work; looks like you got controls with the motor, so plug in the harness, & connect to a battery. Pull all the spark plugs, stick em back in their plug wires and ground against the motor. With the ign switch in the "ON" position, pulling the motor over by rope is fast enough for a spark test. If you get no spark, there is a good test for this style ign, let us know and we can post the procedure.

Thanks Ed, These are just the kind of tips I'm looking for I would have never guessed it needed a battery to get spark, as soon as it stops raining around here I'll do the spark test and post the results
