Re: starter problem

Re: starter problem

If you spend enough time on trouble shooting you eventually find the problem. I think I found the problem. When I would turn the key nothing. Little background. The engine wasn’t starting so I decided to get buy a new starter, due to the cost of a rebuilt. I was reading the starter number off the sales person of I boats dot com. He told me to stop, he replied, that is an auto starter not a marine. He then asked for the engine info. He then sent me a pic of the starter, (no solenoid attached) I told him yes and the starter came. I installed it and turned the key, w/ the plugs out, nothing. So I got a new solenoid. Took the old one out and took it to my local marine store, he got me a new one. In engaged when I turned the key, both cranks were weak, the third time nothing. I was then checking everything w/ a meter and doing the jumper thing trying to find the problem. The a friend told me, there are many different type solenoids. Made me realize I had the wrong solenoid (auto) for my new marine starter. I then looked it up on the I boat dot com website, and sure enough, it called for a different solenoid. I’ll order it tomorrow. I’m confident this will be the solution to my problem. I’ll keep you posted.

Re: starter problem

Well the starter problem is solved. I had burnt out the new solenoid. So I purchased the correct solenoid for the new starter I installed and it cranked fine. So if you install a new starter and it?s not attached to the starter but to the engine, make sure you get the correct solenoid to match that starter. It will save you a lot of head aches and time going though all your wiring system. Thanks to all for you help. Jack

Re: starter problem

Hi Guy's, here I am again w/ another starter problem. After all the was done (see above) New starter, solenoid, new ign switch. When I turn the key the starter engages to start the engine, but when I release the key, it stays engaged. I turn the key to off, and nothing, it still winding the engine. I changed the ign switch, and the solenoid, but nothing. I had to disconnect the battery. The starter in new as well. I assume I got a bad starter? What do you think? Thanks. Murf
