Really dumb question on switches

What is the cutout switch and what does it do? I am refering to the switch on the rear with a roller riding along with the shift cables. I thought this was the neutral safety switch until I checked it out. It looks like a variable resistance switch with one side grounded and the other doing whatever it does. <br />If this isn't part of the starter circuit, is the neutral safety switch located in the shifter somewhere in the shift handle or near the gearbox?

this 'cutout switch' allows the engine torque to cease only for a moment, in order to allow for smoother shifting. This switch allows this by 'cutting' power to the ignition and causing the engine to stumble...sl<br />PS the only stupid question is the one that is never asked.<br />This is a difficult switch for ME to adjust. In fact if there is an easy way to adjust this please let me know, thank you...sl

You really need to order this manual if you are planning on working on your boat very much. You would save days on fixing minor problems.<br /><br /> Service Manual

Ty much again. I have a Clymer manual, it talked about testing this switch but I couldn't find where it said what it was for. I will have to look into the other manuel if I keep going.

I have a seloc manual and it has a very easy setup for this very important part. I believe that you shift it into reverse and check to insure that the roller is in the middle of the depression. any adjustment will be with the brass barrel (max of 4 turns) to get it into the middle.<br />But I suggest you get the SELOC manual it has helped me inmeasureably<br /><br />Good luck

SELOC or CLYMER, neither one gives you the real information, but the Mercruiser one does. Now, why do you think that is?????
