REALLY? why do I feel these are like the fallout shelters of yesteryear? ....

Built of fiberglass with an pole in the center to hang onto. so what happens when the debris that is swept up by the tsunami slams into the fiberglass hull? we all know what happens to boats, I sure hope it's reinforced with something.

Designed to float which in theory is a good thing until we look at a tsunami and what happens, a swell of water comes racing into shore, than recedes back to the ocean. The bright color makes it easy to spot survivors or possible bodies in case they get swept back out into the middle of ocean no where near land with no drinkable food or water.

Honestly I see these being caskets more than anything.

-=EDIT=- sorry for being such a downer tonight, if this device even saves one life that honestly it's done it's job, I just see more issues than good.

hmmm thinking out loud here... attach a 360 swivel attachment to it so that it could gyroscope around, pad the inside and hook to back of a boat much like a tube.....:D ohhhh that would be a wild ride.....

What's the alternative? Dog paddling through tsanmai waters?

I'd be climbing in one - quick.

As I said last night I was in a down mood. Only thing I don't get is you get in to ride out the wave which makes sense until the water flows back out to sea pulling you with it.

I'm thinking the fallout shelter is where you run to be safe from . . . well, some bad stuff that happens and it's probably the best place to be if your not in the bunker with Barack and Michelle. These things are something you jump in hoping to be alive for the next 10 minutes as some really bad stuff is coming your way and there is no other option. No one runs off the road to higher ground saying, "Follow me, I know where we can climb into some big yellow fiberglass balls and ride this thing out."

Re: really? Tsunami Escape Pods?

only way to make this any funnier is if they painted them blue and sold em in sets.

but seriously once again thinking about it, you run get into this fiberglass ball, grab onto the pole and hang on for your life as you start spinning gyroscopic-ally (sp?) around all over the place, slamming into buildings, cars, trees, and any other debris that happens to be in the water.

If the debris doesn't compromise the hull of your "escape pod" you than run the risk of getting swept back out to sea with no food or drinkable water in hopes that someone will come looking for your bobber aka escape pod. Of course most of the rescue teams will be looking for survivors on land so here's hoping ya don't get pulled out to sea.

But like I've said, if they even save one life than they've done their job in my eyes. Just looking at it from an real world POV I would hope the dang things are tied down somehow.

Four adults? I don't think so. Forget food and water, what about air?

Looks like they come with hull registration numbers, probably to help id the bodies.

Also looks like it has a drain plug in the bottom.

I wonder if the Japanese gov't will consider it a water craft, and require pfd's and nav lights?

Hey, it is guaranteed to work. ;)

Still looks like a better atlernative, than to try to make a swim for it, at least from the tsnumai footage I had saw.

It appears that if you run out of air, start getting swept back to sea, or some other problem, you could always "abandon ship" and still probably be better off, than when you climbed in.
