I knew it would be high. Just wanted to know if there were others in the same boat. Paying 4000.00 to rebuild Johnson 175 Fast Strike. All six cylinders are being bored, new pistons, rings, rods, bearings, carbs rebuilt, new VRO pump, thermostat, water pump. Just curious, if you have had a rebuild done, how much did you have to pay?

Thanks,

Crankit

Welcome to iboats. :)

Are they overhauling it or installing a rebuilt powerhead? I'd never even consider such a major overhaul. I would put on a professionally rebuilt powerhead. That way you get a guarantee. I could do it, but the pro rebuilders do in a week what I've done in my whole career. I couldn't even come close to that kind of experience.

crankit
if its a total job that includes a tear down of the gearcase and any nessasary trim unit work its inline
most my v6 rebuilds come in someplace about the 4K mark.
I give a one year warrenty and so far have never eaten one. had one or two fail but 1 was water in the carbs and the other was water in the oil tank. seings how I had replaced the oil tank assy with new at the rebuild, along with the VRO pump I did not cover it cause it was beyond my control. same as the water in the carbs. in my area its 125 to bore the first hole and 35 per hole after that. about 200 a hole to sleeve it. a reman powerhead is about 3200 or so and sometimes the quality is suspect. some reman places have a good warrenty and ask no questions and some wont cover anything. and all have a disclaimer that if you wish to sue you have to do it in the county and state they are located in. but like everything else all you can do is trust the tech and the dealership.
