Rebuilding Carter/Weber 4bbl...question about discharge ball and weight/spring

Hey all, I'm rebuilding the carb on my '95 Maxum 2000sr with a 4.3LX and a Carter/Weber 9600s carb. Long story short, I bought this boat in a million parts with a cracked block. I built a new 4.3 short block last year, have about 100 trouble free hours since. When I got the boat, it came with a "rebuilt" carb. The carb has always had a dead spot from 1/2 throttle to wot. Going to Cumberland next weekend and finally have some free time to fix this. Took it all apart and found numerous issues with it. One of them was that the "rebuilder" didn't put the discharge ball in, in the accelerator circuit. I bought the Edelbrock 1477 kit for this carb. I can use either the weight or the spring. Probably doesn't matter which one I use, but is there a preference in the two? I used the weight but it wouldn't be too hard to switch if the spring is better. Looks like one possible advantage is the spring could allow more volume in that area.

In addition to the missing ball, I also found the float levels WAY off, the secondary air valves were in a bind and a few blocked passages. Be careful who does your work if you don't do it yourself!!

Thanks in advanced for your answers!

Amen to that!!!

The standard carb came with either check-ball and weight or check-ball and spring. The manual just says to replace like with like. If you don't have the original, ouch... About the only advise is to try one and see how it runs, then the other, and pick the best... I know that's not the answer you're looking for, but it's the best I can do, sorry....

Are you using the Merc factory manual for this? (I have it if you want it;))

Good luck,

Chris......

Chris, I am using the edlebrock manual. The mercruiser one would be great!
My son and I took it out on the Ohio river last evening for a test. It is way better than what it was but still bogs a little at 3/4 throttle. It recovers quickly though. A few weeks ago I was at Norris lake and it was real bad but I had 6 adults in it, last night it was me at 200lbs and my 7 year old son at 60lbs. Not sure if the smaller load would matter.
I know the Carb is adjusted to spec, timing is set and advance is working. New plugs gapped at 40 and engines compression is 180-185 in all 6 holes. I bought a spring kit for the metering rods. I will be in Cumberland next weekend. I will have plenty of time to play with it.

For what it is worth, boat was running perfectly last night at 46 on my GPS at 4700ish rpm.
