Re: rebuilding force tilt/trim

Rritt - I followed your advice and ordered a new motor for the tilt trim unit. Boat shop did not have the O-ring that goes between the motor assembly and the pump. Would you happen to know where I can get one, or a replacement that is acceptable? Thanks for the help and I am sure that many people appreciate your advice and willingness to share your knowledge.

wait for motor to arrive. motor should include mounting gasket and the four screws.

The shop that I ordered the pump from informed me that there was not a gasket included and they did not sell the gasket for this item.

that stinks. I'm not sure you can buy them in less than 50. try a hydraulics shop. you are looking for a ASA-041 in a Buna70 material. They are still available through Mercury as F2525 but at $10 each it is unadultered price gouging. The mounting screws on current model aftermarket motors is (4) 10-24 x 3/8" SS Panhead.

or just send me a self addressed and stamped envelope (with a note explaining what it is for) and I'll send you one for free.

Thanks! I installed the new motor and the engine raises and lowers smoothly. Unfortunately, the engine slowly falls. I cannot see any evidence of a leak. What is your recomendation for determining the cause of this new problem?

Bleed down without external leak is almost always the valve body. Not too surprising. The new ones are kind of sloppy and problems are not uncommon. Send it back for exchange while your receipt is fresh. Just as well, 125HP is a bit more than that product can handle with ease. Better to know your small problem now than to have it slip into a big problem the day after warranty runs out.

Which part specifically is the valve body? Is the pump the same as the valve body? Is the valve body the portion that the armature fits into on the bottom of the motor? If so, I removed this from my old motor and installed it on the new one. It is an 85hp.

the valve body is the bottom portion of the pump. It is part with the four hydraulic ports and is secured to the reservoir with four screws. The reservoir is an integral part of the motor. The pump = motor + valve body.

Sir - Back after a winter off of the water! Is the valve body rebuildable, or do you have a recomendation on where to get a replacement?

If your engine is 30-65HP and 3-5 year lifespan is adequate then I don't think you can beat the price and convenience of the $90 ebay valve body. However, if you do not fit into that category then seek a USA made replacement ($250ish each) with retaining clip check valves or search ebay for my rebuild service. If your engine is longshaft, or if you do a lot of skiiing, or if you have 120HP+ then I don't think you should even remotely consider the chinese valve body. It is not built well enough to take the abuse and may not even finish the first season. I think I saw some of the US made VB's last year on ebasic power.

you won't find any marinas or boat dealers that have all the parts, can get all the parts, or even have a diagram with all the parts needed. However, every city has telephone poles. Bucket trucks need hydraulic repair. Find the local shop that stocks parts to fix tractors, bulldozers, backhoes, bucket trucks, etc. They will carry a higher grade oring than mercury and sell it to you for same or less. The only hard part is figuring out which size to buy.
