thanks to this forum i was able to identify the problem with my boat engine. i found a hole in a piston and was going to get a new or remanufactured engine. i was told it would be better to have my engine rebuilt and it would save me alot of money. i have no idea what a rebuild of my engine would cost. i have a 1985 mercruiser 4 cyl, 3.0 liter , 140 hp, 181 c.i. engine. any suggestions?????

What caused the hole in the piston?
Best to find out before you put a new piston in.

Re: rebuilt engine question

bondo, i am bringing it today for an estimate. thanks for the price range. i am betting toward the $1500 area. and hystat, i believe it was timing related since it occurred after a tune up and the timing was never checked. ran rough for a little while and then BOOM.

Re: rebuilt engine question

i had one rebuilt at a local motor rebuilder
about 10 years ago. i was told they could order a marine engine, rebuild kit with pistons rings, ect.

i pulled the motor and delivered it to them.
it was about $800 10 tears ago so 1200 ish maybe close. you will have to let us know what the estimite is

as for the hole in the piston i dont think being out of timmming will cause that, enless the timming chain has skipped a few teeth and the piston crashed in to a valve that was down at the wrong time.

good luck

russman

Re: rebuilt engine question

the price quote i got was $1350. bringing him just the block and head to be rebuilt. that was the price completely stripped down by me and reinstalled by me. it sounds a little high, any opinions on this?????

Re: rebuilt engine question

sounds pretty reasonable as it should last for years if looked after, you should price a bobtail just for reference?

Re: rebuilt engine question

thanks to all for your advice. i think i am going to get a bobtail professionally installed so i dont have to worry about anything i did wrong. my only worry will be paying for the engine!!!
