Re: rebuilt powerhead no telltale fitting

ok I cant find the block, its dark out back. but I do have the exhaust chest in my hand, the thick one with the solinoid mounting spot. put your 1/8th pipe thread in the center about 21/4' to 2 1/2" from the aft edge of the chest. measure from the aft end of the chest just above the starter solinoid mount fwd .
will work fine
I would suggest a call to the rebuilder before drilling.
the red arrow in the pick jtexas posted is the correct casting. in fact the arrow point is in about the corrct spot. just remember which end is fwd and aft :)

rodbolt, thanks. Remember when the Trading Post was about the only grocery store on the OBX?

In my picture and in jtexas picture, the slant side of the chest is the forward side, the straight back is... the back (aft).

If you click on my picture to enlarge it, the arrow number 3 is 2 inches forward from the aft edge of the chest as per the SB. Your measurement of 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inches would put it very close to the slant edge, Does this sound correct?

The SB also says the other measurement is in from the side 1 3/8, but this puts in kinda close to the edge in that direction.

Harvey, just a thought but have you considered just pulling the cover, you might be out a couple of gaskets but it may eliminate some guess work once you see where the passages are.

on your pic, arrow three. look at the ridge ending in a hump that goes from port to stbd. place the tape over that ridge and measure 1 7/8ths fwd and that will put you directily overtop of the water passage. if you wish and can hunt one down 1/16ths pipe taps and nipples are availible. go slow, try to keep as much metal chips out of the system as you can and have fun. I have a couple of them covers if your going to take it off.

Re: rebuilt powerhead no telltale fitting

beautiful. I like that description! Sounds like rodbolt has given me all I need to know. Thanks!

MCM, thanks for that suggestion. I tried to take off the exhaust cover from my original 1986 engine and take measurements (assuming that it has the same passageways as the pre-1983 rebuilt one). However, I could only remove or break most of the bolts and the remaining 4 have such rotten heads that the 6 point sockets and/or vice grips just turn round. So I will take a grinder with me next time. It will be a few weeks before I get there, 70 miles away. And anyway, if I drilled wrong, the worst that would happen would be that I entered exhaust passage rather than water passage, so I could just plug it up anyway and try again....

Thanks to all. Harvey

rodbolt, I finally did it, thanks.

rebuilt powerhead now in place with telltale take- off installed per your measurements.

I dissected my old exhaust cover(finally)and have a few pictures I will post later so others can see what we are talking about. Harvey

here's the pic hopefully.

this is the old motor after grinding off the bolts that were corroded and removing the exhaust case. the water passage is obvious and large enough that the drill location is not critical. There is plenty of room all around. Thanks to all who contributed their knowledge. I appreciate it.
