Hi I recently boat a what I believe is a 16ft Lone Star boat. I am trying to do some research on being that I did not get the title with the boat. The HIN on the transom was only a 10 digit serial number wich is as follows : 05614087.

Does any one know where I might be able to find info on this boat? Every where I've looked they are 12 HIN numbers and letters so I am a little lost. Help light to be shined on this would be extreme helpful

Thanks for your time
Chris

Chris, welcome to the iboats.com forum! The members here are great and the experts in the various forums can help you with any problem involving your boat, motor or trailer. I too had a 16ft Lonestar boat with no title and searched for info. I learned from fiberglassics.com that Lonestar was sold to Chrysler Marine in 1965 and the name was dropped soon after that. I was able to identify my model/year by searching through the sales brochures they have posted. Also, the serial numbers back then only meant something to the manufacturer and did not have to meet any industry format standard as they now do. A lot of Lonestars have survived and many owners belong to this forum. You might also have some luck with the Lonestar Boat Club at the link below. Good luck!

... I did not get the title with the boat.
I hope you know where the owner/seller lives.
If you do not have the Title, You are NOT the owner! :(
Without the Title, You can not register the boat.
Without a registration you can't take the boat on public waters.

This will limit you to your private lake/pond.
Or you now own a 16 foot flower planter box!

Find the owner and get the title signed over to you, or get your money back.

Good luck.

Not always, depends on your state. Here in MI a bill of sale is all that is needed. Anyways, welcome aboard Korb! What type of boat is it? Aluminum or glass? I had a 18' aluminium hard top Lone Star for years.

Yes here in Michigan Bill of Sale is all that is needed for registration.

It is Fiberglas. I found the specs label on the boat and it is rated for a 40 hp motor and like 876 lbs. The original interior of the boat is not there so the pictures don't help me in finding the model. Really erks me!!!!!!

If I can get some pics I will post them.

And BTW thanks for the warm Welcome

If a Texan, go to www for Texas Parks and Wildlife and pull up boat registration form, then pull up engine registration form.

Yes here in Michigan Bill of Sale is all that is needed for registration.

But, is a Bill of Sale all that is needed to transfer the Title?

If so, that is a bit scarry.
Think like .... "Well for $1000, I would be willing to give you the Bill of Sale to the Macinac Bridge!"

Interestingly here in the UK there is no offical register for small craft ( well not the ones I have bought anyway) so you take it in good faith which is not as good as having registrations and clear ownership.

Best of luck with the research Korbs.

I've known several people in Iowa that have bought boats without a title and then went through the process to get it titled. It's a fairly simple process, but it does NOT go fast. As in don't plan on taking it on the water until NEXT summer. But, there are situations where I'd consider jumping through those hoops for the right deal.

Basically it involves tracking down the name and address of the last person to have the boat registered in their name. At this point you can probably get them to just sign the title over to you (or, I guess, return the stolen boat to them). If they're not cooperative (but it's not stolen) then you basically treat it as an abondoned vehicle. You have to send them a certified letter requesting the title and wait a long time for them to respond (either 30 or 60 days, can't remember). If they don't respond you purchase a bond for 3 times the value of the boat (have to carry the bond for 3 years), fill out a bunch of paperwork, get the paperwork notarized, wait for the state to process it, then they'll issue a registration in your name. You are now the legal owner of the boat.

So, it's a huge headache, but it can be done. In most cases it comes up because the PO can't find the title and doesn't want to deal with the hassle of going to the courthouse and getting a duplicate. It's MUCH quicker and cheaper in these cases to just offer them a couple hundred bucks to go get the duplicate registration and sign it over to you.

So, yeah, it can be done, but I'd have to be getting one hell of a good deal to consider going through the hassle. And it requries a good amount of trust in the seller and his story as to why he doesn't have the title. If it turns out that he didn't have the title because the boat is stolen, then you have to just give it back and you're out whatever you paid for the boat.

I have registered 3 boatshere in MI that I did not have a title for.. im not even positive one is needed for small boats, I don't recollect getting anything besides the registration ...I might be wrong on that though. The Secretary of State only requires one of their bills of sale that can be printed off from their website. What part of MI do you hail from Korb?

That's not far at all! What's the width at the transom? I was looking at the 1962 spec sheet on fiberglassics and trying to match up the specs.... and what's the exact centerline length? Those might give you a clue.

Re: Recently bought a boat

If you go back a page from your photo to the main Lonestar page they have pics of various catalogs and spec shears... the newest I saw was a 1962 but models often did not change all that much. I have FB, check you private messages and ill send you my info.
