Recirculation System Servicing 1990 115 Johnson

Here is the page about the Recirculation System Servicing from the 1990 OMC Johnson Evinrude manual for my 1990 115 Johnson.

In this page they are testing two different one way valves:
#1 they call the recirculation check valve, and it's supposed to flow ONLY out towards the barb
#2 they call cylinder block or bypass hose fitting, and it is supposed to flow in towards the threads, or in other words into the barb.

I'm confused, since they don't show where the #1 check valve is located, nor do they show the part numbers for either part. They do show what #1 looks like, but no part number nor location. They do show more or less where #2 goes but not the part number or what it looks like.

I'm confused as to what is what, and what I'm supposed to do to "it". Two different check valves that flow in different directions.​

The valves are in the crankcase. I'll bet if you look in "hose routing" it will show location.

To add to my confusion, here is a picture of the intake manifold with the hoses marked in red. Notice that the manual calls #2 location the bypass cover hose fitting, yet the picture #2 is not of the Bypass cover location, it is the center main bearing location, just behind the throttle cam.



Now I know less than when I started!​

Manual says:

Functional Test
1) Connect a 1/8" clear hose between the recirculation check valve (there are four check valves p/n - 392988 mounted in the face of the intake manifold, see picture of intake manifold. Why don't they say test all four?)​

I think the pictures in the Recirculation System Servicing instructions in the manual page 2-29 are wrong (see my initial posting).
Nothing makes sense, I'm left with some check valves which I don't have a clue which way they are supposed to flow.

I suppose I'll have to check them all and see if any flow both ways, if not, then they are OK.​

Your manual is correct. After the vro's came out in '84 OMC realized the center main brg wasn't getting enough oil so they redid the recirt system. Check the valves as the manual states.

Please read my first posting, when I say the manual is incorrect I'm referring to that page of my first posting, and NOT the Hose Routing diagram of my later posting.

a) Looking at the picture of the manifold and my actual engine which has the same manifold, there are 4 valves, 2 are below the top carb, and those two tie together with a t-fitting and go to the Center Main Bearing inlet just behind the throttle cam. However, the picture #2 in the manual on my first posting, says that hose goes to the Bypass Cover. That is wrong !


b) AND again looking at the picture of the manifold and my actual engine which has the same manifold, there are 4 valves, and 2 are below the bottom carb, and those two valves have a hose that goes to the Bypass Cover on the two sides of the engine, one behind the buss bar on the starboard side, and one on the port side behind the starter solenoid.

In short, I see 4 check valves below the carbs, and none at the bypass cover, or the center main bearing. I have to assume that all four check valves flow out only, and the fittings at the two bypass covers, and the one fitting at the main center bearing flow only in. Therefore, all of the flow is coming from the check valves to the two bypass covers, and the one main center bearing.

OK, now I understand, for all who read this in the future, here is the bottom line:

There are 4 check valves below the carbs, and none at the bypass cover, or the center main bearing. All four check valves are identical and all four flow out only, and via the hoses they flow into fittings at the two bypass covers, and the one fitting at the main center bearing which should flow only in. Therefore, all of the flow is coming from the check valves to the fittings at the two bypass covers, and the one main center bearing. Here is a picture of the fitting showing the screen that the manual speaks about:
