I have a 5hp 1960 sea king by Gale. It is just like a 1960 5.5 Johnson. I am going over it to use on a small jon boat. I have already done the water pump and points/condensers, and am waiting on the coils. While waiting on the coils, I thought I'd replace the recoil rope. I have seen much discussion on this forum over rope length and/or aligning the timing marks. This does have the oval pulley. There are timing marks to align. Now for the delima. There is a mark "ARROW HERE ROPE RECOILED" and under this mak is "JE". Just to the right of this mark is another identical mark except that there is only "E" under it. As it sits now the rope is about 1/8 turn short of the maked area. What does "JE" and "E" mean, and which one should I use?
The flywheel has a double-notch for the paul to catch. I assume that it is supposed to pass the first notch and catch in the second. Such that the first notch will help push the paul back in after the engine starts. There is evidence that the paul has been catching in both notches, but this could be because the rope is too short. I'm also asuming that the motor will only stop running in one of two locations, because of the compression. One cylinder will stop halfway up, and one halfway down. Might be wrong on this though. Just think about a car with a bad tooth on the flywheel. It will almost always stop on the bad tooth.
So, I guess what I really need to know is this: Which mark, the "JE" or the "E" to use, and how long should the rope be? The 1968 6 hp shows pn 313153, which is supposed to be .130" diameter and 56" long. Would that be right?
