Reconnecting my VRO System Help

Hey guys and gals i recently purchased a 1996 Evinrude 50Hp Model: E50TLEDS. The motor has the VRO or the OMS system disconnected, the previous owner said it worked fine but the marina advised him to do it. I KNOW I"M CRAZY for reconnecting the system but i think it's reliable as long as you do maintenance on her.

My questions is

1. How do i go about testing the VRO system after not being connected for more then a year

2. How will i get alarms i don't have the system check Gauge i heard it's built on the engine somewhere and what does the tones mean.

2. Is there a likely chance i have to do a rebuilt or even if that's Possible for the diaphragms

3. Is reconnecting the system the exact opposite of disconnecting the system

4. Is there a complete walkthrough for reconnecting the System

Please help This would be a great How to for OMC fans

It sounds like a good plan, if you buy a replacement pump. Short of that, I would say pass. A 12 year old pump is too much of a risk to your engine. If your pump fails, you might not have enough notice to save your engine. As for the alarms, you should be able to just plug in the harness, connect and bleed the oil system, and it's off to the races.

I would try it with the old pump first. First get a OEM Service Manual (try Marineengine.com) It has all the tests for the alarms and oil pump.

You will need to bleed and attach the oil line to the pump, test the electrical circuits and run a few tanks of pre-mix. while monitoring the OMS pump for proper operation

Yes I think you are CRAZY to reconnect !!!!
If you premix you know you are getting enough lubrication to the motor as long as you remember to put the oil in. I replaced my failing VRO pump with a premix pump early in the summer this year and have a much warmer and fuzzier feeling about my motor getting the lubrication it needs.

My 120 Johnson manual says when restarting VRO system, "use a 1 to 100 premix". When I fired up mine last summer, I did not have any problems and even though the mix was rich (because the VRO worked), it only smoked slightly.

thanks for all the support i'll get a manual in time. just wondering if anyone has any idea on how to bleed the oil system is there a bleeder screw on the VRO unit?

Your service manual will give the procedure to bleed the line. Basically, you disconnect the oil line, pump the oil primer until the air is gone and reconnect the line to the pump and pump the primer one more time. Now run premix until you see the motor is using oil from the tank.
