I have a 1977 BlackMax 175HP. The rectifier tests bad and I'm looking for a replacement. I've read a few posts where people talk about a radioshack substitute that works great. I could use some info on this.

Thanks

Re: Rectifier Replacement

Thanks ricksrster. Are there any special instructions to follow when making the replacement, or is it a pretty simiple change over? Will I need to modify anthing on the engine? I'll be picking it up after work today, so I'll hopefully have it up and running by the weekend.

Re: Rectifier Replacement

Ther was somebody that used one and took pictures that he posted in the forum. I can't remember who is was. It was a while back. I think he used one of the original holes on the motor to mount the new rectifier.

Re: Rectifier Replacement

it was me, but the post is long gone now.

the radio shack rectifier has 4 posts on it. look at the diagram on the packaging, its really simple once you understand it.

2 have " ~ " on them. these go to the yellow wires from the stator, they are your alternating current input.

1 is the positive terminal. this goes to your main hot feed for the 12V+

the last is the ground, this terminal gets attached to a secure ground on the block anywhere.

the two ~ terms are diagonal of each other, as are the + and - terminals. have fun, yes, it really is THAT easy

Re: Rectifier Replacement

Thanks for all the help. It's pretty simple as you said. The pictures were helpful too. The problem seems to be fixed, now if I could only figure out why the key won't kill the engine.... only boggs a little like it's running off of one side. Any suggestions??

Re: Rectifier Replacement

just one quick questions; hate to jump in in other peoples thread

Does this rectifier also have a lead that can be wired to the Tach? Also this rectifier doesn't seem to have the voltage regulator integrated...

Re: Rectifier Replacement

Chundriss, There is no regulator integrated with the rectifier. Did the original have a rectifier?

Either of the stator wires will be the sender for the Tach.
