Do you know if a recycling center would take an aluminum boat and still pay the same rate per pound or is that not accepted or are the rates different?

Thanks!

By recycling center I assume your talking about a commercial scrap yard type of business.

Call them. Most will take it, or storm doors and the like, but beware of penalties for other included metals. Pure aluminum will fetch a much higher price. If they find a steel screw or such, they will down grade price quite a bit.

Hope that helps,

Do you what typically they would offer per pound? Just trying to estimate on buying a 16' boat that is old, but the motor is new and i can use elsewhere.
thanks

You don't have more than about $50 there. You'll be lucky to get about .50/lb.

Where are you?

Round here, the type of aluminum that boats are made of is 45 cents a pound. A lot less if there is steel/wood mixed in. When we take in steel, if there is something that has plastic in it, it will drop the price of the whole load by a LOT. They have a sorter that comes and grades your truckload as soon as you get off the scale. He marks the weigh receipt so they know what to pay ya. So, we take a load of just raw steel and save the appliances for another load.

You can probably get a bit more from selling the hull. There is a good market for aluminum boat projects.

You clearly don't live in my neck of the woods. Old crappy aluminum boats fetch a grand plus. I have been looking for a project hull, 18 footer, for years and there is none to be had. The rare ones I do find go for over a grand, and they are probably in worse shape than yours....

Re: recycle aluminum boat?

Two weeks ago I was cleaning up my place and located some large black garbage bags full of aluminum cans I had forgot about. I took them to a recycling center and got $1.55 a pound for them. I was figuering about 70 or 75 cents a pound, but I was floored by the $1.55 a pound. So being a good recycler, I imediately went to my local "drunk store" and recycled my newly acquired wealth into coupious amounts of more aluminum cans filled with "Golden Nector." I figure It was the least I could do.

You are very close to the ocean. Much of the scrap produced in your area is going straight to India or China. The west coast is a good place to be making scrap right now. You also had a pure product that can be easily shredded.
