I have a... i think its a 1980. Evinrude 50hp. recently it doesn't have any power for the first 15 mins of use. but as i go along it starts to sputter with more power, and eventually it starts to work properly. i took a look at the plugs and they are an odd color. they are a redish rust like color (the tip and elctrode). What could this be.

Sounds like you're flooded???

What color 2-stroke oil are you using...red?

time for a carb cleaning and comp check and fresh plugs ,comp it first
could be just needing carbs cleaned good oil and gas fuel filter inline,
link and sink and timeing check you can do it get oem manual for your motor if ya plan to keep

link and sync meshes throttle movement with engine timing.

More likely, you have a poorly adjusted float or worn needle and seat causing flooding.

Re: Red colored spark plugs

yes what i meant was , run compression first so ya know if ya need decarb .then rebuild carbs, not just clean, and check tuneing of linkage and timeing
are they dry or wet the plugs may also run spark test ,plent of info if ya use the search function.

Decarb??? Use a product called Seafoam...which removes carbon buildup from inside the cylinders...pretty much yearly maintenance for 2-strokes. You can get it at any auto parts store.

is seafoam a fuel additive? what should the compression be?

Re: Red colored spark plugs

Seafoam can be used as an additive and/or directly into the carb. The latter will cause the motor to smoke like a SOB...but it's normal.

Compression should be even between cylinders and in the 100s...below 100 is getting questionable. Obviously, the higher the better, but varies between motor design.

Re: Red colored spark plugs

You didnt use any gas additives like octane booster did you? One bottle of that in a car will turn every plug red.

I think the "red" is a dye to show that a marine gasoline tax was paid.

Nobody seems to have picked up this part. It runs bad until it gets warmed up, then it runs fine.

I think it is running on one cylinder when cold/cool. Carburetors don't change their performance when the engine warms up. . . but electronics with a cold failure might start to work when warmed up.

Check for a good (jumps 7/16") spark on both plugs when the engine is cold. My guess is that one isn't there.

Let us know what you find.

Re: Red colored spark plugs

well it might be sparking one that cylinder if he reaches wide open. he could get a spark tester or run the motor and then turn it off. right then check all the spark plugs and they should be hot and all around the same temperature by feel
