Reinstalling shift lever into lower unit

I was changing the impeller on my Suzuki DT50 and managed to pull out my shift lever. I can look in the hole and see the push rod in the way but I don't know how to move it forward to get the shift rod back in.

Any ideas?

I'm bumping this up because I haven't been able to get any repair shops to look at it yet. Still hoping someone on here can give me a hint.
