One point on heads for marine use. I have NEVER found heads that have had the valve seats replace hold up for any length of time. The seats will come out and usually destroys a lot of other things on the way.

Don,
If you are seeing alot of valve seat failures, you might start looking at the place doing the installation of the new seats. All the valve seat failures I've encountered were directly related to installation operator failure.

I have never had replaced seats fall out, Only "original", even then only after a severe overheat. I have used a local machine shop and "Mercury Repower" for cylinder heads.

I have heard of other techs having this problem... Shed a little light if you will...

Haven't even tried it in at least 10 years. Had heads from several places, there is no machineshop on this island that can do it, and they all had the same problem. We have also quizzed customers that have lost seats in their heads also, and they were remanned head with new seats.
So basically, that was 10 years ago and we learned our lesson.

It's not a problem on cars and trucks, and I would assume the sellers of remanned head know how to install seats, the problem is, is they do not last in the marine engine the way they do in a automotive.
Very few cars and trucks spend hours on end at full load over 3500 rpm like a boat engine does.

A good source for 350 vortec heads new at slightly over rebuilt prices are from the regional Indmar distributors. They convert the standard motor to the "Corvette Special" for Malibu boats. That involves pulling the stock GM head and putting on an aluminum one. That leaves some brand new cast iron heads in their stock.
