Re: Remanufactured 383 Question

Anyone ever heard of CHS Machine Co.? They are advertising a re-manufactured 383 long block with oil pump and harmonic balancer for $2400. They claim it has 420 hp at 4500 rpm and 430 ft lbs at 3500 rpm. Looking to see if anyone has heard of them and if they are reputable..

Here's the link:

That price is not for the Vortec, its and extra $300.00. I just purchased the Vortec 383 stoker from CHS I haven't received it yet. I paid about $3000.00 including shipping, and I am in Jersey so I thought that was a good price.I m getting a little nervous because its late on delivery. I got a few excuses why it hasn't been shipped yet but still waiting for a phone call back on an actual ship date. I have a Volvo Penta SX outdrive so I am not worried about the extra HP or Torqe. As far as the actual horsepower, I will never know cause its going from the crate to he boat. The key factor for me about the 383 is the torque it produces. I have a cabin cruiser and I need the torque. I hope to go from a 15x17 three blade prop to a 14x21 four blade prop. I will post my experience with a CHS machine as I go. Hopefully I will be able to speak positively about them.

Re: Remanufactured 383 Question

4" of pitch might be very optomistic for a cabin cruiser. Assuming you are already in middle of your wot rpms, a 19P might be more realistic. Wait to test the 17P before deciding.

From some of the ebay feedback, a couple of weeks seems to be common with their shipping. Good luck, and hope you have a positive expeirence.
