I need a long block for a replacement to my Volvo Penta 4.3L 1999 Engine. I am looking for the right and most cost effective decision. Is a rebuilt engine safe ? What vendor do you recommend ? I know a local marine dealer that uses Jasper Engines on their rebuilds.

I would tend to think it`s more about the care taken during assembly.
Some use assembly lube ,some dont. The skill of the mechanic installing all the change over items. The mechanics that "pre-oil " a motor prior (10 minutes, turning the motor to make sure all the bearing have oil)to firing it for the very first time(recording oil press, volts, temp), . The shop that gives the customer the check list that was done at the time of firing, testing in the boat, the final check-off BEFORE THE CUSTOMER EVEN GETS TO TOUCH IT.
Instruction on how to break it in AND NOT JUST BREAK IT.
Assembled properly by a manufacturer dosent mean squat if it`s just thrown in the boat and you just give the shop a check.Maybe this sounds like a "venting issue" but I have yet to lose a new motor.

I'll jump in right behind Bt Doctur and agree with everything he said.

And i'll add....

If somebody is doing the work (ie a dealer/marina) Make sure you understand what the warranty is, what it covers, what it doesn't cover, and if it's for parts only or parts and labor. Before you make your decision.

Also, be very sure exactly what is required for the warranty. On the new motor I recently installed, it specified that a new oil pickup and a new or rebuilt carb must be installed, among other things. I wouldn't have done either if not for that paperwork.
