I have a Sea King I am restoring . I want to install my 1956 10 HP johnson . The boat has a Smith controller . I need to replace the shift and throttle cables as they are cut. I have no idea as to how to decide what length to get /and if they will fit my Smith 2 lever control. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on how to measure for cables and possibly what cables for the Smith control.

Thank You
ED

Re: Remote cable length and Smith control question

The measuring is easy Ed. Measure from where the control box will be to the back of the boat where the control cables will turn to the engine. Mearure from here to the center of the engine. Add both measurments up and round off to the next foot. Add two more feet for the loop into the engine.

That's the easy part. I have never heard of a Smith control. Getting cables might be tough unless one of the "older" heads have some ID.

I want to expand my Ohio colleague's answer, because the shift and throttle are on opposite sides on your motor, add 3' for the throttle cable since it has to be longer than the shift cable. (assuming that your control box is on the stb. side of the boat)

HEY, OBJ,

Aren't you old enough to remember rigging those motors with the shift and throttle on opposite sides???? :)

Thanks for your help. If I cant solve the Smith control problem I'll look for an Evinrude or Johnson controller. Any idea other than Ebay to find these to buy outright.? Can you still buy new cables for these?

Thanks again
Ed

Naw SeaHorse......just remember doing a lot of rudders......LOL!!!!

Hey Ed....look around....two lever OMC/Bomby controls are still pretty common and the Long Life cables to fit them and the engine are still available.
