(Remote) Control Box question

Sure the info has to be on here somewhere, but my searches have been so-far unproductive. I have an '83 Johnson 60HP (J60ELTCB). I have been searching over the years to find a parts motor. So far no luck. I found a very good deal on a boat with trailer (mine is on its last leg) and a '95 Evinrude 60HP. I was thinking of swapping motors (so I can tune up one while the other is in service). I was wondering if a mid 80s OMC control box and cables would work on a '95 OMC. I found some aftermarket parts that appear to cover from late '70s up to the 1995 model year (but not 1996). The shop2.evinrude site has control box pictures for '83, but not for '95 model years. The steering arm looks the same. So, could I remove the throttle and gear cables, unplug the red plug and essentially swap motors??? Thanks!

I'm not smart enough to answer your direct question, but the color of the plug generally is the clue as to whether it will be compatable. Mis-matched colors will not work.
