I have a 92 Sea Ray with 350 Mercruiser outdrive. On my Qiucksilver remote the up portion of the switch will not engage the motor to tilt up, but the down protion still works. The trailer button on the remote still engages the motor to tilt up. My guess is the switch is bad. Does anyone know if I am right and can the switch be replaced?

I have been looking at my remote and cannot seem to find a way to access the switch. Can the switch be removed without removing the remote completely? Thanks for any help.

1 question, does your trim gauge work? I ask this as on Mercs if the trim sender switches fail (wires corroded) your trailering switch will work going up and your down button will work. Check there 1st. If the sending units are ad, you'll have to replace them or bypass the switch. If you bypass you take a chance of overlifting your outdrive and binding your yoke on the engine coupler.

don't guess, troubleshoot the problem, then you know for sure what is wrong

look at the wiring diagram in the manual and find where the trim limit switch is wired into the "up" circuit

bypass the wiring for the switch and see if the trim button works

Tirm guage has not worked for awhile, but the up button just stopped working. Thanks for the info I did not know that the sensor was directly related. I will bypass and see if that is the problem. I will get back with findings or questions.

Just to be clear - the trim limit switch and trim sender are two different things. On one side of the outdrive is the trim limit switch - and on the other is the trim sender. You will need to connect and bypass the wires from the trim limit switch... not the gauge wires.

Re: Remote control trim tilt switch replacement

Okay, I traced the wires to the trim limit switch and one of the wires was broken apart. I checked for continuity on the trim limit switch and there was none. I then bypassed the trim limit switch and the up button on the remote worked. I need to replace the trim limit switch.

I would like to try and replace the limit and gauge switch on my own. It would be nice to see what's going on back there. I have read some posts and it appears to be a difficult job. I have also read that a transom kit should be purchased too. Can anyone provide detailed instructions, recommendations on parts to replace and a drawing/break down of the outdrive. I have a repair manual but it has not been as helpful as these fourms are. The troubleshooting procedure that Don S provided was spot on and the wiring diagram really clear. I think with everyones help I can nail this job and get my boat back in the water. Please post up with any help.

Re: Remote control trim tilt switch replacement

Does anyone have instructions on the upper unit removal. I have never removed the upper unit and would like a more detailed instruction. Will I need any special tools. I saw a reference to a hinge pin tool and a alignment tool for the driveshaft. Do I need these tools? Will I need to order some extra gasket kits for when I reassemble the upper unit to the boat? Is there any other parts I should check while I have the upper unit removed? I am mechanicaly inclined but very green when it comes to the outdrive. I have only replaced the impeller on the water pump a few times. More information will help, thanks.

The tilt/trim switch mechanism is one of the things Merc has been working on for decades and they never will get it right, mainly because it's a bad design. PERIOD.

Don't waste your time replacing the stupid thing. It'll just go out on you again. Most people learn to feel their optimum drive 'out' position after a while just using the trailer button.

Head up to the Adults Only sticky at the top of this forum.
There are OEM service manual links that you can download. All the instructions you need.
