What is the best ways to hold the fly wheel from turning when trying to remove the top nut? I am going to Auto Zone to get a harmonic puller and the bolts.

i just had a buddie hold it for me, unless its really tight i guess. then if you get the nut loose run it up to the top of the bolt and have one person pull up on the flywheel while one hits the nut with a hammer not too hard. make sure you tap the nut and not the threads on the bolt. also i heard this is not good on it to do it too many times. good luck

We are both old and he can't hold it. What size bolts do I need for the fly wheel?

We are looking at taking a steel bar and matching the flywheel pull holes, drill holes to match and attaching. This will give us a handle to hold on too.

Don't think that will work due to the fact the bolt holes (1/4 -20tpi) are under the little chrome plate the nut holds down. I think there are other holes in the flywheel that you can put snug fitting drill bits in and then a bar between the bits. If you have air tools you can back the nut off very easily with an impact tool. Be sure to torque the bolt when re-installing it. Best of luck. Rick.

Thankd,We put our wrench on the nut, then hit it with a hammer and the inerta
allowed the nut to come loose. We removed the fly wheel like you said.

Then we removed the drain plug for the carb and only a little gas came out as we pumped the bulb.

We opened up the carb and it is full of fine trash and rust. We are going to boil out with muratic acid but can't figure out how to remove the flat head screw under the gas throdrale plate. see picture.. We need about another 1/2"to get the screwdrive into the slot.

Is there an easy way to get that flat head screw out so we can remove the carb?

Will the magplate not rotate out of the way?

I have done that with an 18" x 2" piece of 3/16" aluminum bar. Works fine!

Put the shift lever in forward and turn the tiller handle as far counter-clockwise as it will go.

dunno about the muriatic acid idea...I'd use carb cleaner spray and compressed air...if the acid idea still seems workable..try it on a piece of aluminum foil..

Some metals will disappear in muratic acid. I would never use it to clean my carb. Much better products are available. Rick.

We tried your suggestion on putting in gear. It still would not allow us to get to the screw. It feels like it is hitting a block put there to protect the wires.
see attached

We took the top off the carb and blew out the trash and put it back together. Now when we pump the bulb a stream of gas comes out inside the carb. see attached

Your going to have to look close to see why it wont advance when in gear. You should be able to advance the armature with the tiller throttle enough that the screw becomes exposed. It is necessary to remove the lower bowl to do a good carb. cleaning. There is a jet behind the drain plug on the bowl that needs a good cleaning. Keep looking until you figure out what's stopping it from throttling to full throttle. If your getting a gas stream in the carb. just by pumping the bulb then I would suggest your due for a new carb. kit. If you get an OEM (johnson/Evinrude) kit it will include a new float and by the look of your picture that would not be a bad idea. Rick.

Thanks,

We will follow your suggestion and get an OEM carb kit.

We tried the muratic acid and it eat up the aluminum foil with a cloud of smoke. carb Cleaner sounds better.

Thanks from two ole grumpy men still trying to unscrew the screw.

Cheers

The screws holding the bearing under the magneto in place tend to loosen, make their way up and jam against the plate, pull the flywheel and the mag and inspect.
