Actually, it would be more important for the return tube to seal. Air leaking in there can kill the pump prime. On the other hand, there really shouldn't be air in there, as the housing is supposed to fill up with water. I'd get it as good as possible and go for it. At least until proven that it doesn't work.

thanks FR , am really on fence here and respect your thoughts. my options as i see it are , gamble a bit , put back together and test this spring real well ( thought i would put in a tell tail also to help me test, and check the heads for heat as i go , this model dont spit much out when running from what i have heard. if good great, saved me alot of time and work, if not go the distance then tearing off powerhead , replace tubes, checkout thermostat and take off covers to inspect water jackets and deflectors. not really in a hurry cause project boat wont be readyy this season anyway. this outfit been sitting many years so could be some serious corrosion to deal with, altho the lower unit and prop bearing housing and water pump area did not show much corrosion. undecided and appreciate the input from all.

so i put tell tale in and lower unit back together and went well i think, but , got a few questions and the first one makes me feel a bit not so smart. so maybe keep the giggle away from me and any help greatly appreciated. here goes - wondering if putting muffs on the intake ports , turning on the hose, without engine running woudl tell me anything at all? my wonder is if i got those tubes in the grommets good, and if i just run some h20 and it came out the tell tale or short hoses from thermostat i would assume my tubes went in correctly. with engine not running am i going to learn anything?
next anybody know lower unit oil capacity on a 1977 115 v4? thanks

I don't think the muffs will do much other than give you a warm fuzzy feeling. Or not. Anyhow, I don't have the specs for that particular model, but similar ones hold 26 ounces.
