Powerhead was running hot on one side of my 1991 225 evinrude. took off the head on that side and found complete blockage on top water jacket. While I was in there looked at cylinders and they are smooth combustion chambers clean as well. just a little bit of carbon covering the piston top evenly. Should I scrape this off? What is best to clean all that crud out of the water jacket. Also the piston had a little play all around it in the cylinder. Is this normal?

Re: Removed heads

Stuff some rags in the clyinders when you clean out the water passage. Clean up the pistons & head with engine tuner after you repace the gasket. Slight movement of the piston in it's bore is normal.

In my opinion you will need to carefully scrape the corrosion and deposits out of the head passages mechanically with, picks, old screwdrivers, etc. Be careful not to scratch the mating surface of the head. Check the head for flatness while you're at it and have it planed at a machine shop if necessary.
