Re: Removing a 18hp fastwin waterpump

Guys, I'm just not getting this. Are you sure that my motor has a thermostat? I'm pretty sure about what it is, but don't see one. If I'm seeing this correctly, it would sit right up above the plugs. Not there. I dropped the lower unit this morning. The copper tube in there was bent. I probably did it, much to my embarassment. I took a long screwdriver, and straightened the tube back up. I'm positive that I have a good straight pipe now. Checked it with a long piece of braze rod that went straight through. I put everything back together, and this time it slid right into place, the way it probably should be. Started it up. Nothing. When I shut it down right away, though, there was some water oozing out of the hole. Is it not running long enough to pump? Is there another blockage to check for? I'm really against a wall here. Thanks, as always.

Oh, sorry swimmin', the thermostat didn't appear until 1959.
It does take a few seconds for the block to fill up and water to start coming out of the outlet. After that is should spatter (gush is really too strong a word). It's possible you just didn't leave it long enough.
Did you try blowing up through the water pump tube? If it's clear you should be able to blow through easily. I slip on a bit of hose for hygiene. :)

If I blow air up through the waterpump tube, where will it come out, as opposed to the thermostat cover? I just want to know what to be looking for.

It should come out the large hole on the back of the midsection of the engine. All the cooling water ought to exit that hole.

There may be a small hole part way up the water tube. It's supposed to be there if it is. :)
