Vandals hit our section of the city last night. About 35 cars got a new Krylon paint job and 2 flat tires. I got a knife taken to my new ('06) Mustang. They left my tires, but decided to do some creative etching on my car. It appears to be clear coat depth, maybe a little paint, but not to the primer. Tips?

With it being an 06 I'm guessing you have comprehensive on it. I know with my insurance acts of vandalism have no deductible. I'd see what yours is and if it has no deductible take it to a shop to get fixed.

Good buffer at a detail shop and sometimes at a car wash

Get it fixed right. File a claim.

You can wet sand the clear coat, buff it and make believe nothing happened but, it will thin out the clear coat to a thickness where it will not last.

It mak look good up front but it will eventually harm the finish.

Yes, file a claim, or take it to a professional detailer. Let him see if he thinks he can buff it. But from your description it doesn't sound like it can be, The problem with trying to buff it, is that you can go through the clear, and then you have to paint it anyway.
But you say "maybe paint", so that says to me it's "definately" through the clear already. that means it needs to be Professionally repainted. And depending on how many panels they got, the price could be anywhere from $500 to $5000. Good luck.

Yes........ park a brand new '08 model under a huge oak tree at night.....when they show up to do their slicing and dicing, drop a big net over them from out of the tree.....next, tie a rope to the bumper, other end to the neck of one, then gradually and oh sooooo slowly drive car forward untill said vandal (s) are within 6" of tree limb..... then just stop for about 5 minutes......that should take care of that problem.... :)
