removing lower unit 25HP

I have a 1997 25 hp Merc. I am taking ther lower unit off to replace the water impeller. I got all the bolts off and pulled the lower unit off. When it came off it pulled the shifter shaft out of the lower housing. I thought it was like the old units that had a splined shifter shaft. When I look at the top of the shaft it looks like the shaft goes up into a curved rod. I can not figure how to get it to release at the top.

uder the carb on the port sside there is a screw/ clip holding the shift rod. Thats why you need a manual as your a long way for done when you get it loose.
