removing lower unit on my OMC/Cobra engine in order to check the water pump

I removed all required bolts and the unit will come down about 2 inches but will not come far enough to remove it. Is there something I am missing?

You need to remove the whole thing, upper and lower unit. I just went through it. It is hanging by the shift rod and if you pull to hard you will mess up your shifting!!!!! Shift rod has to be turned 90 degrees and than your lower unit will come out.<br />BTW on OMC Cobra you do not need to go through this in order to replace the impeller!<br />Take off the back plastic cover behing the upper unit and your pump will be infront of you, than 3 bolts and it is done. Marinas charge only $60 parts and labor for this.

Mish is right. The water pump on Cobras is located under the plastic cover on the back of the upper gearcase.No need to split any part of that gearcase or remove the drive.

I guess this is one of the nice things about Cobras in comparison to Mercruiser<br />I did wonder where the impeller was, but $32 invested in Clymer repair manual fixed it for me right up.

Yep, water pump impeller is right thar.

BTW - Cobras usually hang up on the u-joints. They are slightly larger than the boot seal they go through. Grease up the u-joint CV center section or the rubber seal when putting back on. Use a large screwdriver or bar to turn the u-joints back and forth to get thru the seal.

Yep, water pump impeller is right thar.

Thats only if you buy the OEM old stock bellows.
I have changed a bunch of them and the after market bellows kits do not fit as tight over the u-joints.

If the original poster already split the lower from the drive it will need a new seal or you are going to have water in the gear lube...
Sounds like he turned a 30 minute job into a major headache...
Thats why a service manual pays for itself...

Agreed.... and he can check the gimbal bearing and grease the ujoint while he has out putting a new gasket and orings in.
