Removing OMC outdrive

I need your help! I am parting out an old boat which has an OMC electric shift 800 series stringer drive. (I thought briefly of trying to restore it, then my sanity kicked in :) ) It's actually kind of a shame, since the hull is sold as a rock and is a nice design for offshore stuff. It is a 1977 24' Seawind.

Anyway, I want to remove and sell the outdrive and haven't messed with any OMC stuff in over 15 years. (In fact, this is my brother's old boat that I actually rebuilt the engine for - probably 20 years ago. It had a Ford 351 engine that is now shot, but the outdrive is good. Well... as good as a 31 year old electric shift can be!)

Anyway.... What's the procedure for removing the drive? I am familiar with Merc stuff - but not OMC. I plan on removing it in pieces. For instance, taking the lower unit off first. It appears to be held on by six bolts - three on either side. Are there hidden bolts?

Once that is removed, how does the upper come off? Any online manuals? I certainly don't intend on buying a manual for this since I have no intention of doing any work on it other than removing it. Any help is appreciated.

You cant really separate an OMC like that. You will damage the shift wires. Disconnect the shift wires, they are low inside the boat near the transom on the starboard side. Usually inside some rubber slide boots. Go out side and pull the cable out , it might be corroded , pull firmly but gently. Carefully remove the three screws from the tilt Quadrant. on the port side, out side. Tie up or block the drive and move the quad. forward, then lower drive to quad. loosen the 8 screws on the trunnion caps on each side of the drive 1/4 bolts 3/8 heads. Now remove the rubber caps you will see 4 hex head bolts, these are the last things holding the drive on, Carefully back these out. the drive will fall so have some one help or block it well. not to tough the second time you do it. good luck Bill

Re: Removing OMC outdrive

Thanks Bill,
I tried just now removing the three bolts holding the tilt quadrant on - they are stuck, of course. I will try using some heat next.

The cable is shot anyway, so I went ahead and cut it where it comes out of the transom and removed the lower unit. Came right off. At least those bolts were not stuck!
