I am thinking about buying a 1981 Johnson 9.9 hp. The only thing I dont' like about it is the paint job. Sometime in the past, the whole motor was painted green/black camo with some type of spray paint. In some sections the awful paint job is flaking and chipping off. I was wondering if there is any way I can remove the paint off of this great running motor. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Brent

You could use paint stripper but thay stuff is so aggresive, you gotta be real careful what you get it on. Try laquer thinner first and if that don' work, sand it. You're gonna have to sand it anyway before you prime and paint it anyway.

c/6

Hooty

Aerosol carb cleaner works very well and it wont hurt the under paint. Will make the top layer just bubble up. I found this out on accident while working on an outboard that was painted. It was painted with spray paint, and it took it clean off, and left the factory paint. Good luck.

Re: Removing outboard paint

carb cleaner is not gonna touch OMC paint. Most strippers have a hard time with that. I use super stripper. Environmentally friendly and works well. I have not seen that stuff hurt any rubber seals I have put it on. Takes a few applications to get the OMC stuff off.

Alot of your cheaper paints will come off with carb cleaner, degreaser, thinner and the likes. I just painted my engine, lower unit and leg. I used rustoleum premium paint enamel, aeresol can. This stuff is strong! I had to re-strip a piece I screwed up and it took the stripper a good while to strip it.. and it was only on for 1 day. GOOD STUFF MANORD! But.. I did wipe the surface with laquer thinner before painting.. that helps alot! I am very happy with the results. BTW, I used a paint brush to apply the stripper and a scouring pad with a handle to remove it. It's a good idea to use the paintbrush alot before using the scoring pad. The bristles will penetrate the paint and it will come off with the brush. The scouring pad will remove the paint, but after wiping a few times will get dry. You have to keep soaking the scouring pad so as to keep applying the stripper to the paint below.

Re: Removing outboard paint

Thanks for the replies! Since this was painted with some old crappy cheap spray paint, I will probably try carb. cleaner first. If it doesn't work, I will try the super stripper. Where can I get super stripper and what does it come in? Thanks agagin for the help!

Brent

Try Hydrostrip from ICI, or check out the manufacturor www.napierenvironmental.com It is one of the new water based strippers- doesn't burn exposed skin, non toxic and won't damage the substrate.

WEAR EYE PROTECTION AND GLOVES!

Whatever you use, it's gonna be nasty if you get a splat of it in your eye, and you won't realize you're getting a chemical burn before it's too late!

SJF

Re: Removing outboard paint

If the carb cleaner doesnt work use Tal-Strip or Tail-Strip II (aircraft paint remover). It is made by Mar-Hyde and can be found at any Advance Auto parts. It will eat the paint off and if you aren't careful, some of your skin too!
