Re: Removing REALLY rusty bolts

Just an idea, out on the oil rigs we sometimes use toilet bowl cleaner on rusted bolts its the best penetrating liquid i have ever seen work. and i have seen it work on bolts so big and rusted that the impact wrench just stands up and knocks. then a guy with a bar takes them off. worth a try and only a couple minutes soaking works. 1/2 hour max.
but remember its acid so u have to be careful

P :)

Wow never seen that done before. Have to try it because I am always open to new ideas.

Re: Removing REALLY rusty bolts

Have you tried using socket rounded bolt remover? It might help. I bought a set from sears and it was the best thing since apple pie ;) Tap the socket into the bolt and it would grip the bolt as you work the bolt loose. The only problem you might face is that the bolt might be frozen onto the chassis and that is another matter all together. Hope this help.

Amzoil MP works well.

If you really want cheap and fairly safe, use:

COCA COLA

I use it to clean rust off bolts and nuts all the time. It does take time, but it will dissolve a rusted nut/bolt combo overnight.

Keep that in mind when you have that cold glass.

First, PB blaster for a good over night soak, then impact tools. You can try a little heat then, If that doesn't work, bust out a cutoff wheel and replace the bolt.

Re: Removing REALLY rusty bolts

A few days before I start this kind of thing I soak the bolt connection down with Liquid wrench and give it a few bangs to get it going and well lubricated.
Then if the fit to the needed wrench or socket is loose (& I agree with CAT on this with the 6 point only part) then I put a few layers of tin foil in the socket and tap it down tight on the bolt.
Then with a torque extension or breaker bar on the socket I 'try' it...if it doesn't come....no problem. Then I try it the other way a bit...that's right...tightening it supposedly.
Then I soak it again, and leave and repeat the whole thing the next day.
Keep us posted.;):)

Very common problem on Dodges , I was a Service Director for years , Save the knuckles , Cut them off But if they are the type that goes into the frame with a welded nut on the other side be ready to have to drill and tap the remainders out .

Snap on make a cool tool for seized bolts. Its air hammer bit that has a socket adapter end on it. You apply pressure to the bolt with the air hammer as you turn the bit with a wrench. It works slick. As far as I know Snap on is the only one that makes it.

You could try freezing them with one of the many canned freezes used in auto shops.
