In process of removing powerhead off 96 johns 112spl. pulled off both heads but #1cyl head bolt sheared off top leaving about 1/2" of stud sticking out.
Im thinking vice grips, but any other tricks? Been soaking it in wd40 and it looks like it'll still be frozen. Thought i'd ask, maybe heat?
Thanks,,, Joe

Re: removing sheared head bolt?

There are better penetrating solvents than WD-40 (http://www.kanolabs.com/google/). You could give that a try before attempting to heat the head. I have taken an electric engraving tool and vibrated broken off bolts after they had already soaked for a bit with penetrating solvent. It seemed to loosen them up just a little bit more than not and they would turn out using vice grips on the portion sticking out.

Use a torch, and get that stud red hot. Wiggle the stud back and forth with the vice-grips until it wiggles easy then twist it out.

If the head is aluminum (is it?), would heating the stud up red hot damage the surrounding part?

So far, it hasn't hurt the few dozen I've done that way. (I'm assuming the head is already off and you've got the stud just sticking out of the block.)

If you work on old outboards, especially salt water outboards, you'll soon learn to love the blue wrench.

yes, head is off and bout 1/2" of stud sticking out of block. Not gonna work on it till tommrw., but thought I'd get all my ducks lined up. Power head is still on and I think thatll be many more posts because that thing seems locked up too. Will double check and make sure I pulled all nuts and bolts. +I thinks its easier to work on extracting damaged bolt while attached to boat. Thanks for tips!!!!!!!
