Thought I would share a technique for removing residual silicon. I saw a post a while back that mentioned the fun of this chore. I had a lot of it on removable deck panels above my gas tank. It was also on every attached fitting and on the aluminum window frames of my walk around cabin.
Scrape as much off with any flat paint scraper as possible.
Use acetone or any other solvent and apply it to the remaining silicon.
Use a small electric drill with a medium strength wire wheel to remove all traces of the remaining silicon.
This will gouge painted surfaces a bit, but it is really faster and easier than anything else I tried. As long as the substrate is gel coat there will be no gouging. I used the cheap wire wheels available from harbor freight tools.
Cheers!
