I'm trying to remove my 1987 115 hp Mercury motor, but having trouble figuring out how to remove the steering cable. Any ideas?

Thanks

Have you loosened the cable nut on the tilt pin?

c/6
Hooty

Loosen cable nut on tilt tube all the way.
Remove nut from drag linkage and pull linkage off of cable end.
Slide cable out of tilt tube.
( depending on how much room you have you might have to turn the wheel all the way to the side to get the cable out of the tilt tube.)

Depends on how much room you have you might have to pull the engine off the boat to remove the cable.

Re: Removing steering cable

Thanks guys. I've loosened the cable nut, but wasn't sure if that was correct. I wasn't able to get the cable to slide out of the tilt tube, but also don't have a lot of room. On either side of the tilt tube are two big nuts. On the side were the steering linkage connects, just the nut is visable, and when you turn it, the nut and threads (were the cable nut threads on) on the cable side turn as well. Do these two nuts and I presume the tilt tube need to be removed first? or should the cable just slide through?

I need to build a motor stand anyway, so that should give me enough room to slide the cable out if that is how that should work.

The cable should just slide through the tilt tube.
