Removing SX outdrive via pivot pins

All,
tomorrow I am going to cannibalize an old junked boat for its SX outdrive and anything else outdrive-related I can get off easily.
I have only a hour or two and so I wanted to be sure I fully understood the process so I don't waste any time.

The manual discusses how to remove the pivot assembly but only with the outdrive off- can someone run over the steps it takes to remove the pivot assembly when the outdrive itself won't come off?

If I remove the pivot pins will the whole unit come off and away from the transom assembly?

Is there a better or quicker way to remove the transom assembly and take everything to include the pivot assembly and outdrive?

Thanks!

Re: Removing SX outdrive via pivot pins

Can be done, but you will need to cut the bellows (spring steel wire inside) and the raw water intake hose. Disconnect the shift cable or cut it. Remove the trim sender to expose the pivot pins 1/2 inch Allen key with an extension tube for leverage and hope that the shaft has not rusted into the gimbal bearing. The trim cylinders are expensive, so if you can get them off too it could be worthwhile, even if it is just to rebuild them with the kit that is now available at last. You might need a drift to drive out the shafts that the trim cylinders are mounted on. BTW it is heavy for one man to handle. Best of luck.

Thanks dypcdiver. I was hoping it was just the bellows and the water hose I had to deal with - everything else is already out of the way. I'm hoping that I can get the outdrive off of the studs so I can take it apart correctly, however I just wanted a backup plan.
THanks

Re: Removing SX outdrive via pivot pins

Well,
that went extremely easy- far easier than trying to pull the outdrive via the 6 bolts/nuts.

I used a 1/2" hex drive (drive was 1/2" as well) from Harbor Freight along with a torque wrench and the pivot bolts came right out. I then removed the three bolts from the base of the assembly, removed the hose clamp on the water line and removed the hose clamp on the bellows- everything came right off with no damage whatsoever.

The only issue now is that I noticed engine oil inside the bellows- no water though!
I recall reading on other posts what that suggests - haven't searched it recently though - is that an oil passage o-ring failure?

Input shaft seal usually is the culprit.

Thanks Lou, I'll look into it and see if that's the cause. It was very little oil and had not interfered with the grease staying on the u-joints. I've replaced one on my CJ7 before- hopefully this is just as easy.
