Does anyone know how to get the forward gear out of the lower unit. I have two lower units and am taking apart and using the good parts from the two to build one good one. The only thing left in one housing is the forward gear and the smaller gear on the top that conects to the reverse and forward gear. They seem to be really in there, is there a trick to removing the two while keeping the bearings in good shape?

Re: Removing the Forward Gear in Lower Unit

Once you take apart the lower unit, the pinion and bearing will come out of the gearcase as a unit. then the forward gear will come out easily. Obviously you have remover the rear nut, but to split the lower unit there is a long stud in the front with a 9/16 nut on top. remove the nut and try to split the lower. The stud frequently corrodes into the aluminum so it may be a difficult job.
