Repainting Stripe with Briteside

Haloo.......<br /><br />Got one ugly blue stripe. Probably gonna just buff out the Gel coat and try to match a small area that was repaired, but would like like cut my teeth with the high tech paints by grabbing a quart of Briteside and repainting the very ugly blue stripe on my runnabout. I was going to sand it, paint it over with some left over Interlux Barrier coat and then try some Britside over that. If anyone has any suggestions or caveats please let me know. <br />What kind of tape should I use to mask it off? I have heard someone say that they had Briteside peel around the edge on them. I wonder if it was from the glue on the tape?<br /><br />Thanks <br /><br />H90

Horse,<br /><br />Yes, Brightside will lift on you if:<br /><br />1. The surface is not prepared properly.<br /><br />2. The paint is too thick.<br /><br />3. Not enough drying time is allowed.<br /><br />#3 is where the rub is. If you let it dry until it is good and hard, you will have a very difficult time removing the tape. If #1 & 2 are followed, you should be OK.<br /><br />I prefer to use the blue painters tape from 3M. It's not cheap but it sur is a lot easier to remove.

3M's olive green fineline tape is the standard for striping. us a wider taper (1/2 to 1") for long straight runs such as boot stripes.<br /><br />3M makes a more flexible blue if you have any substantial curves. not quite as easy as green for the straight runs.<br /><br />to ensure your edges stay down, run a red scuff pad over the tape edge to ensure sanding to edge.<br /><br />usually i'll mask a bad boot stripe off with regular 2040 series masking tape. DA the old stripe off. retape, etc, etc..<br /><br />you can use barrier coat for a primer in a pinch but you will need to sand it thoroughly before painting, meaning no shine, orangepeel, etc or it will peel.i prefer Awlgrips high build primer...<br /><br />not a big fan of any non-catylized paint myself, but do use Brightsides on occasioin for ease of use etc.. i generally do most roll/tip work with Awlgrip...<br /><br />hope that helps some...
