I recently purchased a 1977 Tom Boy bass boat in reasonably good condition, but there are close to a dozen holes around the console and over the bow where various equipment had been mounted (CB antennas, etc). I have been unable to find a tutoriol on filling in these holes and matching the paint. Anyone on this forum had any experience in this area they wouldn't mind sharing?

Re: Repairing screw holes in fiberglass

I have been using the West Epoxy System (available at but not the same company as West Marine) to fill mine. I bought the pumps that go with it and it is great for mixing small amounts equally. Epoxy is more expensive than regular polyester but mixes and cures so well, and stronger. You can mix in a gel coat colorant, also available at the boating supply stores in order to try and match the color. Place a piece of masking tape behind the hole, and fill er up. Place a piece of stiff clear plastic, like an overhead transparency sheet over the hole to smooth it out. You will have a permanent repair that will waterproof the original hole. You can wet sand the area after it cures with 400, then 600 grit wet and dry emery and it will pretty much blend in. Wax it out and your set. This is also a great technique for waterproofing any holes through the transom or other piece of wood that may be prone to wicking in water. Enlarge the hole, fill with epoxy, then drill out the hole for the size bolt you need. You are now drilling through epoxy, not wood, which will not absorb any water. <br />Hope this helps.

Tom Boy Bass Boat? Man, I haven't heard of one of those in a long time. I am now 36 and grew up in Huntsville, AL fishing out of one of those. I wish I had bought it years ago. I would love to have the boat I grew up in. Can you post a picture?
